On a physical card, gently scratch off the strip on the back to show the code. An e-code usually arrives by email. Either way, an Xbox code has 25 letters and numbers in five groups of five, like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Add all 25 characters, or a clear photo where every character is readable.

Xbox gift cards come as physical cards sold in shops and as digital e-codes. Each is in the local currency of the country it was bought in, such as the US, UK, Canada or Australia, and only works there. An Xbox code won't work if it was already redeemed to a Microsoft account, if a physical card wasn't activated at the store checkout, or if the code is too damaged to read. Make sure the country and type you pick match your card. If a card is declined, the app shows you the reason.

Microsoft says Xbox gift cards bought at retail never expire, so an unused card you paid for keeps its value. Promotional cards, such as those from Microsoft Rewards or Xbox Game Pass Rewards, do expire. If your card came from a promotion, check in the CardElite app whether that type is accepted before you trade.
